Mr. Sensitive!

So last night Henry and I are watching the new Tim Allen show. Forget the name of it. Tim Allen takes his small grandson out trick or treating and comes home, takes off the kids mask and it's a different kid. Most people would laugh. Henry gets up says "I don't want to watch this". I said why? At first he wouldn't tell me. I finally got it out of him that he didn't like the fact that he brought home a different kid. I said does that upset you? He said yes. He didn't think he would be able to get his grandson back. I said of course he will. I said - it's just a tv show - it's not real. He said he still didn't like it. Whenever I think my kid is so tough he goes and does something like this to make me realize he's really Mr. Sensitive. I love that kid.

Ahhh the life of a pre-teen. Henry wanted a party and I think he's getting too old for them so I compromised and had invited a few friends over to watch a movie and have pizza. He really has a nice bunch of friends this year. The boys watched Space Balls (sorry parents, I didn't realize that movie had so much bad language). They ate pizza and junk food and played manhunt. I think they all had a good time! Here are the boys!!!! Gavin, Alec, Thomas, Joe, Samuel, Danny and Zack.

Henry has been wanting to be the villain from the movie "Scream" for a long time. He's never seen the movie so why he wanted to be him is beyond me. He went trick or treating with his neighborhood buddies. He had a great time!

Astrocartographer or Cop

So the other night at dinner I asked Henry what he wants to be when he grows up. He says I want to be an Astrocartographer. I said ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ok what is that? He starts explaining some sort of astrological location of the stars, something or other, greek sounding business. I said I have no idea what that even means. I said well I thought you told me last week you wanted to be a cop so you could arrest the bad guys. He said nah. So hopefully by next week it will be something else. I just like the fact that he's still young enough to dream and change his mind every day if he wants. It's fun trying to keep track of all the different jobs he aspires to. I just hope one day he finds his passion and makes a living out of doing whatever that might be.

Middle School!!!!

My sweet little "baby" is off to middle school. MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!! I am the mom of a middle schooler. HI, my name is Tina and my son is in Middle School! Hi, how are you, nice to meet you, did you meet my son, the middle schooler? I can't get used to it. Life as he knows it has changed. He has to wake up at 6:30 am now - big difference from 8am last year. He has locker combinations to remember. He has to change classes. He has 8 new teachers. He has to change clothes for gym. It's a whole new world. For both of us!!!!

The Dog Rescuers

I feel like we are always rescuing (sp?) someones dog. The other night on my way home I saw Mark and Henry walking down our street and Henry points to a dog on the side of the road. So before I know it Henry is opening my car door and letting the dog in. I said what are you doing? He said we need to take him home to make sure he doesn't get killed. I said does he have a tag? No. So we drove around looking for someone looking for their dog. Asked a few people - nothing. Now it's dark and I don't know what to do so we take the dog home and hope a posting on craigs list will pan out. We take his picture - post a few pix on craigs list and decide we should take him for a walk and see if anyone is looking for him. Luckily as soon as got into the development across the street from us a woman stops in her car and says have you seen another dog.....ACE? ACE is that you? So the dog runs up to her and is excited to see her - she is just as excited to see him. They had just moved into their apt. and the dog got out. She said her husband was beside himself. So after we leave Henry got a little upset because of course I think he thought we were going to get to keep him. He asked when we were going to get OUR dog. SIGH! I told him after we come back from vacation we will look for a dog to rescue. I'm not sure I'm ready but I can't keep putting it off. I'm sure once we meet our new housemate we'll fall instantly in love but for now.....stay tuned.

First Guitar Lesson

Henry had his first guitar lesson last night. I have to say - I was shocked at how quickly he understood what the teacher was telling him. I wanted to say - can you go over that again - I didn't get it. But I kept my yap shut and just watched. I hope this is something he will continue but I'm not sure he will. He didn't want to practice when he got home which I think if he loved it - he would be practicing. We'll see.

Selective Hearing

Henry came home the other day from school and I knew he had watched the movie about puberty and what to expect from your body as you mature. So Iasked him about it. He said, and I quote, "all they talked about was penis's, penis this and penis that". I said oh ok - well did they talk about vagina's? He said ummmmm no - just penis's - penis, penis, penis. Then he says "well they did say the word boobie once". So now it's confirmed. Boys really do have selective hearing!

My Birds

Even my birds are dysfunctional. We had a Robins nest in our bush and Mark decided to show a neighbor boy the birds - well I think they scared them and they all fell out of the nest. They were very close to flying but still couldn't fly so were running all over my porch and front yard - they kept putting them back in the nest and then the birds would jump out again. I finally said - leave them alone! Then a silly wren decided to build her next in my geranium plant. I was so excited becuase she laid eggs and I could see them by just peeking in. We went away for the weekend and when we came home - the birds and the eggs were gone. Not even a trace of a shell. Then I bought a couple of bird houses for my porch - Mark said - they won't live in there! Well sure enough a pair of chickadees make a nest in it and I was so excited. Mark comes running into the house one day and says - I need something to put a baby back into the bird house. So one baby was dead and the other one was on the ground flailing about. We put the live one back in and hoped for the best. So far I think they are ok. I have too much bird drama!

Memorial Day

We had a nice memorial day weekend. We went to the pool and hung out with friends. Too much fun. We went to the parade in town. We stayed indoors when not at the pool as it was hot hot hot. This is going to be a great summer! I cannot wait!

Class Trip

Henry's class trip was to see the Wizard of Oz in Phila. I was so excited that I was picked to be a chaperone. We get down to Phila and they tell us we have to eat lunch at 10:30 am! We had eaten before we left home so that should have been my first clue that the day was not going to go well. We get to the Kimmel Center and I mention to another mother that I was surprised to see the show was only an hour long. The movie is 3 hours long! She said - oh this isn't the full version - this is a condensed version for kids. UGH! So the show finally starts and they are singing these babyish songs. I'm thinking - oh boy - here we go. Well the whole show was very babyish. It was the Wizard of Oz but dumbed down for 3 yr olds. Why would someone plan a class trip for 5th graders to see a show meant for 3-4 year olds? It was awful. I wasted a day off. I did get to spend the day with my boy and his buds though - so that part was worth it.

I was talking to Henry yesterday about how my parents never sat with me and did homework. I said when I was your age I just did it by myself and never had help. He looked at me as if I just told him he was adopted and said "that's just harsh". hahahahahah - I said - ummm - not really - that's normal! So then I said and when I was your age I made my own lunch and got myself ready for school without any help from my parents. He says "why were your parents so mean"???? I said they weren't - I was 11 years old - that's what you do when you are 11!!!!!!! That boy!

Great Wolf

We took Henry to Great Wolf Lodge over the weekend. It's like Vegas for kids. He had a blast. Loved it there. I think he enjoyed the hot tub more than anything - that boy and his hot tubs. He also really enjoyed the Wizard Quest. Sometimes when you think they are so grown up, they go and fool you.

SNOW DAY!

This winter I'm starting to feel like instead of announcing snow days through the school they should just announce school days. It seems like it's been snowing here every week! I'm not a fan of the cold and when it snows I usually get pictures from inside the house but this day it was actually nice outside so I took a few pictures and then ran right back into my cocoon. Henry was playing with all his buds this day and having a darn good time doing it!

It's good to know that Mark is doing a good job being Henry's dad. Yesterday Henry said to him what will I do if you die? Mark says - I'm not going to die for a long, long time. He says but what if you die when I'm 15? He says "who will do things with me, like you always do". Mark says - hopefully by the time I die you will be grown and have kids of your own and you will be doing the things with them that I did with you.

It made me think that Mark is doing a good job. Henry likes spending time with him and obviously he's learning to be a good father just like his dad.

I cannot believe Henry is 11 today. Where did the time go? Did I blink? Was I in a coma? Did someone wave a magic wand and I missed the last 10 years? I just can't believe he's that old! Thanksgiving

We have alot to be thankful for this year. We bought a bigger house. We have wonderful new neighbors. We've made new friends. We're all healthy and our mothers are doing well. My sister Mary got word that she is still cancer free. Henry's new school is helping him in every way possible to get good grades. We never go hungry and we are able to buy nice things. We are blessed. Happy Thanksgiving.

Henry is just too funny. We were in the car the other day and the radio was playing Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is You". So he's listening and she sings "All I want for Christmas........." and before she sings "is you", Henry sings "is Presents". So when she sings "is you" - he says "hey, I thought she was going to say is presents". I started laughing. He says why are you laughing. I said because that's not how the song goes. He says "ew love stuff - why would you want that - why wouldn't you want presents". I think I laughed for about 10 minutes - he was getting mad at me too. That boy is a riot!

Halloween was fun this year - I actually went outside of the house!!!! It was a nice night and we went with our neighbors and their kids to the next neighborhood over to trick or treat. We all had a really nice time. We didn't get any kids at our house which is a little sad but at least Henry had a good time running from house to house with his friends.

New Friends

Henry and the three kids in our neighborhood have become fast friends - they are inseparable. They are always over one anothers houses. I love it - it's what I had as a kid and what I've always wanted for him. Today I heard the three boys on the porch playing with their DS's and I grabbed my camera and headed out - unfortunately Henry is onto me and caught me ready to take a picture and ran. I was so mad - it was the cutest picture of the three of them on the glider all heads down and staring into their DS's. So I took these few pix of them in the trailer instead. Not what I wanted but at least I got a few shots.

Getting pumpkin picking pictures to me is the best - the colors of fall - the outdoors - the bright orange pumpkins. Now that Henry is almost 11 he's definitely of his own mind. He refused to take his hood off for a picture because he had just had his hair cut the day before. He also refused to wear the clothes that I wanted him to wear to match the colors of fall. sigh! It made me a little sad to see all the mom's at Styers taking pix of their little ones all dressed for fall with those cute little round faces in awe of all the pumpkins. sigh! I miss those days. I know they have to grow up and I know eventually I won't have any pumpkin pictures at all unless I make Mark stand there and pose. Sigh! Oh well, at least he enjoyed picking out his "warty" pumpkin. Sigh!

Cape May, NJ

As everyone who knows me knows I loooooooove Cape May. It's one of my most favorite places on earth. We went again this year and in usual fashion the weather did not disappoint. It was gorgeous there. I just love Cape May in September. I probably shouldn't say that because now everyone will go there in September.

Bathroom Not Working

We had a small family picnic this weekend and our powder room is right off the deck so people didn't want to use it for fear someone would hear them "going". So they were using the upstairs bathrooms. We've always told Henry he has the big bathroom off the hall. Apparently he didn't want people using his bathroom because this is the sign we found on the bathroom door when everyone left.

Henry went into the shower the other night and for some odd reason he is fascinated by my razor. He knows he's not allowed to touch it but he couldn't help himself. He calls me in to tell me he cut his hand. (luckily just a scrape). I asked if he was using my razor on it - he said yes. I said you know you aren't allowed to touch it - why did you do that? He said he wanted to shave his arms because he doesn't like the hair on his arms. He then tells me that a little girl in his class shaves hers (oy!). I said well boys don't do that. He said well I wanted to see what it would feel like. So later that night when I was helping him get ready for bed I looked at his face to make sure he didn't use the razor on it. He asked what I was looking at and I told him that I was checking to make sure he didn't use the razor on his face. He says, pointing to his upper lip, "ooooooh nooooo mommy, I would never touch this beauty with a razor".

I was hysterical for about 5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!

The last big snow storm we had Henry and his friend Brock had "snow" much fun playing in the back yard under the trampoline. It was their little fort (Daddy helped them build it of course). I have very fond memories of playing in the snow when I was a kid and I'm happy Henry will have those memories too. I'm sure there will be more snow pictures on the way as we're supposed to get another foot of snow tomorrow!

Mark and I planned a little getaway to Charleston, SC for the two of us a few days after xmas. It was nice - a bit chilly but very nice. I'd like to go back again in the spring when everything is in bloom. The houses were spectacular. The people were so friendly. It was nice to just be away and not have an agenda. I cannot believe Henry is 10! Did I blink? Did I turn around? How did this happen? He really is maturing in a lot of ways (but also like a typical boy - not so much). I have to say - he's such a sweetie pie - love him to bits. He is always so attentive. If I say my back hurts - he'll massage it for me. If I say I'm cold - he'll run and get his batman blanket for me. If I say I'm tired - he'll run and get his pillow and tell me to put my head down. He's so so cute. I love that kid!

Henry was a vampire this year for Halloween. I felt bad for him as his neighborhood pals weren't around to trick or treat with him. He did end up trick or treating with his friend Thomas which was a nice surprise. We usually have anywhere from 50 to 100 kids - this year we had a grand total of SEVEN!!!!!!!!! Seven kids! That's insane - I had so much candy left over so I took it to Bounce U where they give you a free session for every pound of candy! Not a bad deal!

Mark called me at the office this morning and said "your child is weird". I said I know - why? He said this morning for breakfast he had a bowl of corn pops and then was still hungry so went into the fridge and took out a hard boiled egg, then still hungry after that he went into the fridge and took out tilapia leftover from last nights dinner and ate it cold (ick) and then pulled out the lite cool whip and ate that out of the bowl. So Mark said what do you want me to pack for your lunch today - he said a yes and I want a cold fish sandwich. OOOOOOOk - it's official - he is weird (and having a growth spurt).

Fourth Grader

I have a fourth grader now! Wow! Henry's first day was a little slow getting started. He kept saying he didn't want to go. I tried to remind him that seeing all his friends would be fun. I think he was a little nervous. I told him to sit next to Justin (who he knows) and that would be easier for him. Every year I take pictures in front of the big tree out front and then I take pictures at the school and in the classroom. Well this year the aid would not let me in the classroom. I was soooooooooooooo mad! I feel like I was ripped off this year. Also, I get pictures every year with Brock, Henry and Jackie. Jackie was running late and I didn't get any pictures of her! Again - a little mad! I know I'm being silly but I love our traditions and if they end that means he's getting older and if he gets older then that means - well - you know..... Sigh! Anyway, here are the pictures I did manage to snag.

Mark was planning to go to a swap meet today which usually means he leaves very early in the morning. Henry was supposed to go with him but asked if he could come to work with me instead. I agreed knowing the office was going to be quiet today and we're still on summer hours. About 45 minutes before we're due to leave for the day Henry decides to put a pretzel square into the microwave and nuked it until it started smoking. He calls me into the kitchen and says "I need help". When I got in there it was smoking and the smoke was rising to the ceiling. I had a feeling he would set off the smoke alarm. I started fanning all the smoke alarms but it didn't work. I immediately called the management of the building and told them to come shut it off. They shut it off but in the meantime the fire department came along with a police officer and the fire chief. What I didn't realize is when the smoke alarm goes off, it goes off in the entire building - 5 floors!!!!!!!! Everyone evacuated except for me and Henry. When the fire chief got to our floor he was not happy. I made Henry tell them what he did and apologize. The cops and the other guys were laughing but I was not. So so embarrassing. When we left for the day the fire engines were still there and the chief had the road blocked off to our building!!!! I found out several days later that 2 fire trucks showed up along with the fire chief and a police car. The fire fighters were all dressed in their fire fighting gear and had gas masks on and axes in their hands! Kill me now!

Everyone always asks Henry "Don't your parents feed you". Well I decided to take pictures to prove it. We went to the Hershey Hotel and ate a big brunch in their circular dining room - so so yummy! Henry ate a bowl of fruit loops, an apple, an omelet on an english muffin, bacon, strawberries and pineapple, and two drinks. The kid can eat - I think he has a hollow leg. Did you notice the waffles have the imprint of a Hershey's kiss - so so cute!

Hershey Park Happy

Henry picked Hershey Park for his vacation this year. So I decided since we've always wanted to stay at the Hershey Hotel it was now or never. We really enjoyed the hotel and the park. It was hot but we were always near a pool so it wasn't that horrible.

Tony and Kathryn had a very nice picnic and invited Dan's girlfriends parents. Super nice family. We really enjoyed the day. Henry played with his new friend Carly and his cousin Kyla - so cute! We also fell in love with a new game called ladder ball and had to run out the next day and buy it! The food and people were great! Good time had by all.

Emergency Room

Henry and his friends were on the trampoline and Jackie comes running in to tell me Henry got hurt doing a flip on the trampoline. I’ve heard this before so didn’t get too worried. Well then I saw him come into the house with blood dripping from his mouth. He hit his knee to his mouth and split his lip open. I took him to the emergency room and on the way there he said “I rue this day” – I started cracking up – this is a word he had asked me about a few weeks prior as he heard it on a TV show and didn’t know what it meant. He's fine - no stitches needed - looked worse than it was.

Wow - I can't get over that my oldest sibling is 60! Judy and Linda were always like second moms to me. I miss Linda terribly so I'm glad that Judy is still around so we could celebrate her birthday. Love you sis!

Mother's Day

We did the usual Mother's Day jaunt to Peddler's Village. Except this year - my mom and I went a little early and did some shopping. I was good except I forgot how long it takes for my mom to get from place to place so there was a lot of stopping and sitting and catching our breath. We basically hit 3 stores and that was it. We met the gang at Cock and Bull for lunch(?) - Dinner(?) - what do you call it when you eat at 2pm - Linner???? So the food was good - the company fine - then we went outside for pictures. What a fiasco! hahahah - I did get a few "ok" shots but because of where we were standing and where the sun was - we didn't get that many great shots. I wasn't about to ask everyone to move so I could get better shots. It was hard enough getting them to that location and posing. All in all it was a nice day - I relaxed and enjoyed myself.

Easter

Easter seemed to sneak up on us this year. Henry still believes in Easter bunny - well at least I hope he does - his friend told him there's no such thing. I told him there is so hopefully he believes ME over his friend. I know it's just a matter of time but I'd like him to stay little as long as possible.

We offered to keep Amy's dog for her while she went away. Brownie was the perfect house guest. Never hogged the bathroom or ate up all our food. She was just the perfect dog. She's so well trained and well behaved. We really enjoyed having a dog in the house again.

High Series

Henry had a good year in bowling this year. His team came in 2nd place but not trophy for that - only first place. But he did get High Series Male trophy. I'm not even sure what that means but he was happy with a trophy. Had he not received one - it would have been a blood bath! Phew!

Immigration

I think - not really sure - that Henry had to write a paper in class pretending he was an immigrant coming to America for the first time and had to write down all the things he saw, etc. It's a good thing he's cute!

Mark wanted to go to a car museum in Hershey, PA. Of course Henry assumed we would be visiting Hershey Park. We had to tell him many times that they were closed until summer. We promised to come back in the summer. For me and Henry the entrance fee was probably a waste of money but Mark enjoyed it and it was a nice family outing. Here are my boys and their toys.

Snow Day

We ALL had a snow day last week - it was nice but too cold for mommy! The only reason I went was to get pictures. I know - shameless, but I did! I didn't even get too many pictures because Henry was too cold and wanted to leave. I think that and the fact that it was crowded didn't suit him. Here's the best of what I took.

So FINALLY the birthday parade ends. Henry's birthday seems to go on forever. His birthday party with his friends was at the Bowling Lanes (AGAIN). It was fine - all boys this year. I think all the boys had a great time. I didn't hear any complaints so I think that's a good sign. Here are some cute pix from the day.

Must Love Dogs

Tonight I did my first good deed of 2009. I was driving home from work and saw a beagle in the road. I pulled over and got out of my car and walked toward him. At first I wasn't sure if he was friendly or not but he started to wag his tail as I got closer and I knew he was fine. I stopped traffic and scooped him up and put him in my car. He smelled very bad and was very thin. Adorable and quite lovable - a little old dog. I drove from house to house asking people if he was their dog. There's only about 5 houses on that street. I saw another beagle in the park next to where I found him and knew this other beagle was looking for him. I figured I'd see a person eventually but didn't. I was yelling "HELLO" as loud as I could hoping the dogs had an owner nearby. I finally got the other one to come over to me and I scooped her up and put her in my car also. I waited long enough for someone to show up but no one did so I called 911. The police officer that came out was afraid of dogs so I had to put them in the back of his squad car. hahahahahah - too funny. He said that he would drive around on the other side of the park and see if he could find the owners. I hope he wasn't just telling me that because he knew I was upset that they wouldn't get back home. I said what happens if you don't find the owners - he said he would take them to the station. I hope I did the right thing. I really hope he found the owners. I was sad to see them go but know that I saved them from being hit by a car during rush hour.
